About Exhibition
ถ้าจะถามว่างานจิตรกรรมฝาผนังเปรียบได้กับอะไร ในมุมมองของผมงานจิตรกรรม ฝาผนังคงเปรียบได้กับหนังสือนิยายเล่มหนาสักเล่มหนึ่ง หรือตำราเล่มใหญ่ที่ภายใน บรรจุเรื่องราวน่ารู้มากมาย ให้ผู้คนเปิดอ่านได้ไม่รู้จบและถ้าจะเปรียบงานศิลปะชุดนี้เข้ากับหนังสือสักเล่มหนึ่ง หนังสือเล่มนั้นคงเป็นบทความ หรือเรื่องสั้นที่ผู้เขียน(ตัว ผม) เน้นไปที่การเล่าเรื่องที่สั้นกระชับ ได้ใจความ ที่ผู้อ่านสามารถอ่านได้จากต้นจน จบภายในเวลาไม่นานนัก
ผมใช้ชื่อการแสดงนิทรรศการศิลปะในครั้งนี้ว่า Mazescape – เมืองวงกต ที่ผล งานส่วนใหญ่มีขนาดไม่ใหญ่มาก เมื่อเทียบกับผลงานในหลายๆชิ้นที่เคยทำไว้ก่อน หน้านี้ผลงานชุดนี้สร้างขึ้นในช่วงปี2562 – 2564 โดยได้แรงบันดาลใจจากการตั้ง คำถามถึงการดำเนินชีวิต การหาความหมายของการมีชีวิต ไปจนถึงการทำความ เข้าใจกับชีวิต โดยผลงานในแต่ละชิ้น เป็นการขมวดเอาปมความคิดในแต่ละช่วงเวลา มาสร้างให้เกิดเป็นผลงานศิลปะ โดยถ่ายทอดความรู้สึกนึกคิดออกมาในรูปเขาวงกต ที่เป็นเสมือนตัวแทนความสลับซับซ้อนภายในจิตใจ หรือความคิดวกวน สับสน กับ สถานะการณ์ตรงหน้าที่บางครั้งเราอาจจำเป็นต้องอาศัยสติปัญญาแลประสบการณ์ในการหาทางออกแห่งปัญหา ที่เปรียบได้กับเขาวงกตในงานผลงานจิตรกรรมชุดนี้
เกี่ยวกับศิลปิน
ขวัญชัย ลิไชยกุล
เกิด พ.ศ. 2526 ที่จังหวัดอุตรดิตถ์อาศัยและทำงานอยู่ที่กรุงเทพมหานคร
เริ่มต้นศึกษาศิลปะในระดับอาชีวะจากวิทยาลัยช่างศิลปสุพรรณบุรีก่อนจะเข้ารับ การศึกษาต่อในระดับปริญญาตรีและโทที่ภาควิชาศิลปไทย คณะจิตรกรรม ประติมากรรม และภาพพิมพ์มหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากร
ขวัญชัย มีความประทับใจและได้รับอิทธิพลจากงานจิตรกรรมฝาผนังในพระอุโบสถ เขามีความเชี่ยวชาญในด้านการสร้างสรรค์ผลงานที่ใช้วิธีการเล่าเรื่องราวแบบภาพ มุมสูง โดยใช้การวาดเส้นขาวและดำซึ่งเป็นเทคนิคที่เรียบง่าย หากแต่เต็มไปด้วย รายละเอียดที่มีความสลับซับซ้อนและแฝงไปด้วยการเสียดสีประชดประชันต่อ สังคม ที่เขาจงใจสอดแทรกเอาไว้ในผลงานของเขาอย่างมีอารมณ์ขัน
ขวัญชัย นำเสนอผลงานที่มีความเกี่ยวข้องกับวิถีชีวิตของผู้คนในสังคมร่วมสมัย โดยนำเสนอประเด็นที่มีความเกี่ยวข้องกับการเมืองสังคมและศาสนา รวมไปถึงการตั้งคำถามและการหาความหมายต่อชีวิตในสังคมปัจจุบันผ่านมุมมองและความคิด เห็นส่วนตัวของเขา
ขวัญชัย ได้รับเลือกให้เข้าร่วมจัดแสดงผลงานในนิทรรศการศิลปะครั้งสำคัญอาทินิทรรศการศิลปะกรุงเทพฯ 226 (หอศิลปวัฒนธรรมแห่ง กรุงเทพมหานคร, พ.ศ.2551), ฉายาลักษณ์สยาม : ระลึกอดีต มองปัจจุบัน ภาพถ่ายโบราณ พ.ศ. 2403 -2453 (หอศิลปวัฒนธรรมแห่งกรุงเทพมหานคร, พ.ศ.2559), การแสดงศิลปกรรมร่วมสมัยนานาชาติครั้งที่ 2 Thailand- Biennale,Korat2021 (หอสมุเฉลิมพระเกียรติร.๙จังหวัดนครราชสีมา พ.ศ.2564) และจัดแสดงเดี่ยวผลงานศิลปะของเขาอย่างต่อเนื่องอาทินิทรรศการ ศิลปะIdeal city (ภูเก็ต 356 แกลเรอรี่, พ.ศ.2552), Under-Construction เขต ปกครองพิเศษ (นำทองแกลเลอรี่, พ.ศ.2557), Metrospection นำทองแกลเรอรี่ พ.ศ.2560) และปัจจุบันผลงานชุด “MAZESCAPE” 2022 ณ JOJO KOBE Art Gallery เชียงใหม่
“White eel in the dawn of the exile” by Ubatsat is an art exhibition that explores the transformation of complex geography that resulted from the Basin Development Strategy. The artworks reflect a structure of natural unusualness which are modeled from myths and If you ask me what Thai mural paintings compare to, I would say, they arelike a thick book of fiction or a large textbook that contains manyinteresting stories, allowing people to dip in and out endlessly.
The works in this exhibition emulate a series of short stories in which theauthor (I) focuses on telling a concise, thematic story that the reader canread from a beginning to an end in no time.
“Mazescape” is what I call this exhibition, where most of the works are notvery large, compared to many works that have been done before. This seriesof works was created between 2019 and 2021. They are inspired by thequestions of living, from the meaning of life to the understanding of it. Eachwork describes the summary of thought from each moment, combined intoa piece of art through the form of a maze. The maze represents thecomplexity of the mind or confused thoughts arising from the occurringsituation. When getting lost, sometimes we may need to rely on ourintellect and experience to find solutions to problems or the way out of themaze.
Artist’s Biography
Kwanchai Lichaikul
Born in 1983 in Uttaradit, Thailand. Resides and works inBangkok, Thailand.
Kwanchai started studying art at the vocational level atSuphanburi College of Fine Arts before attending SilpakornUniversity, where he received both his Bachelor’s and Master’sdegrees in fine art from the department of Thai Art, the facultyof Painting Sculpture and Graphic Arts.
Kwanchai has been inspired and influenced by Thai muralpaintings in Buddhist temples (Ubosot). His black and whitedrawings project from a high angle, almost isometrically,cityscape and everyday life in contemporary society. Thetechnique may look simple yet elaborate, hidden in thosedrawing lines is the sense of irony and sarcasm which hedeliberately inserted into his work with a sense of humor.
His work points out political, social, and religious issues in oursociety and brings up questions that seek a new meaning of lifethrough his personal views and experiences.
Kwanchai has exhibited his works in a number of greatexhibitions such as “Bangkok 226” (Bangkok Art & CultureCentre, 2008); “Unseen Siam: Early Photography 1860 – 1910″(Bangkok Art & Culture Centre, 2016); “Thailand Biennale, Korat2021” (King Rama IX Commemorative Library, NakhonRatchasima, 2021). His solo exhibitions include “Ideal City”(Phuket 346 Gallery, Phuket, 2009); “Under Construction”(Numthong Gallery, Bangkok, 2014); “Metrospection” (NumthongGallery, Bangkok, 2017) and this ongoing exhibition “Mazescape”at JOJO KOBE Art Gallery, Chiang Mai, 2022.
